Guides

Connect your first device

You need three things: your server address, a TAK user, and the TAK app on the device.

1. Find your server address

It is at the top of your server page in the dashboard, shown as yourserver.takgrid.com:8089. On Scout and Ranger plans the address is server.takgrid.com.

Devices always connect on port 8089 with SSL. Port 8446 is the admin web page of a dedicated server, not for devices.

2. Add a TAK user

Dashboard, your server, User Management, Add User. Usernames are 3 to 32 lowercase letters and numbers, no dashes. Set a password or let one be generated. The password is shown once: note it down.

One user per device. No email is sent to the user: you give them the address, username and password yourself.

3. Connect the app

ATAK (Android):Settings, Network Connection Preferences, Quick Connect. Enter the server address, the username and the password. Press OK and wait a moment; the certificate is issued automatically and the connection icon turns green. If you use the Add Server menu instead: tick "Enroll for Client Certificate" and untick "Use pre-configured trust".

iTAK (iPhone, iPad):Settings, Network, Server, press plus, choose "connect with credentials". Enter the server address, port 8089, username and password, press Connect.

WinTAK (Windows): Settings, Network Preferences, Network Connections, Manage Server Connections. Address as above, port 8089, SSL selected, "Enroll for Client Certificate", then the username and password.

No app at hand: the browser client is at https:// plus your server address, same username and password.

When it does not connect

  • "Certificate not trusted": the port is wrong. Use 8089, not 8446.
  • Address: the name only, for example myteam.takgrid.com. No https://, no IP address.
  • Wrong username or password: usernames are lowercase. Reset the password in User Management and try again.
  • Works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data: the mobile network is the cause, not your server. TAK needs the older kind of internet address (IPv4), and some mobile carriers only give phones the newer kind. Use Wi-Fi for now and write to support with the name of your carrier; we will tell you what to change on the phone.
  • "Socket closed" shown once while connecting: usually a reconnect on a weak connection. Harmless if the icon stays green.
  • Connects and drops again and again: check that each device has its own user. Two devices on one user push each other off.
  • Connected but you do not see each other: see "Add your team", channels.
  • Still stuck: write to support@takgrid.com with a screenshot of the connection screen and the name of the app. We answer within one business day.
